60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz and beyond: refresh rate has become a standard selling point. But what does it actually change when you use a screen?
Refresh rate is one of those specifications that sounds complicated until you understand what it measures.
A screen running at 60Hz refreshes its image 60 times per second. A 120Hz display can refresh 120 times per second.
That’s the basic idea.
So why does 120Hz look smoother?
When you’re scrolling through a website, moving through an animation or playing a game, the display can update more frequently.
At 120Hz, the interval between refreshes is shorter than at 60Hz. When the device and software can keep up, movement can therefore appear more fluid.
The difference is particularly easy to notice when you scroll quickly through text or menus.
But refresh rate isn’t everything
A 120Hz display does not guarantee a better experience in every situation.
The processor still needs to produce frames quickly enough. Software has to support higher refresh rates. And many devices dynamically change their refresh rate depending on what you’re doing.
A phone might use a high refresh rate while scrolling and lower it when displaying relatively static content.
What about gaming?
Gaming is where refresh rate becomes more complicated.
A higher refresh rate can make motion appear smoother, but the game also needs to produce frames at a sufficiently high rate to take advantage of it.
If your system is rendering a game at 45 frames per second, a 120Hz panel cannot magically turn that into 120 frames per second.
The display and rendering pipeline have to work together.
What should you actually look for?
Don’t buy a screen purely because the number is bigger.
Look at:
- refresh rate
- response time
- brightness
- resolution
- adaptive refresh support
- panel quality
- GPU performance
Refresh rate matters.
It’s just one part of the display experience.
